An introduction to Imitrex side effects:

As with any medicine, Imitrex can cause side effects. Generally, Imitrex is tolerated well by most people. Even when taking different doses, most Imitrex side effects are mild, don’t last long and cause no lasting problems. However, Imitrex can cause extremely rare but serious side effects involving your heart, including heart attack or stroke. These types of problems have generally occurred in people who already had coronary artery disease when they took the drug. That is why before you use Imitrex, tell your doctor if you have:

  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorder
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease

Also, be sure to tell your doctor if you have risk factors including:

  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • High cholesterol
  • A family history of heart disease
  • Being over 40 and a man
  • Being a woman who has had a hysterectomy

If you have any of these conditions, you may need to have your dose adjusted or have special tests to safely use Imitrex.
