Expert Answer: As a type 2 diabetic, what can I take for my migraines?
Having diabetes is a consideration in the use of the acute medications (to stop an attack) and the preventive agents (to reduce the number of attacks)
In terms of the acute medications, the most relevant question is whether your blood vessels are fine, and a cardiac stress test is generally performed before the more specific migraine agents are used, like triptans and ergots.
In terms of the preventive agents, biggest problem is that they generally cause weight gain which is a problem for most of us and especially diabetics. A notable exception is topiramate (Topamax) which commonly causes weight loss and therefore can be very helpful for migraines and weight management.
All of these medications have side effects and problems, which your doctor can go over before they are prescribed.
