Invisible Illness Awareness Week
“But you don’t look sick.” Does this anger you as much as it does me? Just because an illness can’t be seen doesn’t mean it isn’t real or debilitating. In fact, about 96% of chronic illnesses are invisible.1
To raise awareness of the frustrations of invisible illnesses, Lisa Copen launched Invisible Illness Awareness Week in 2002. In the last 14 years, it has grown from an awareness event to providing support and coping techniques for people will invisible illnesses.
This year’s National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week is this week, September 8-14. “Just One” is the theme of the week. Organizers exhort, “You may be just one, but you are one of over 100 million people who live with a chronic illness, and most of the illnesses are invisible. This year, choose to do JUST ONE THING… Whether it is to blog, post on social media, talk to a friend, share an article with a loved one…. do ONE thing that will make a difference.” Not sure what to do? Consider responding to the “30 Things You May Not Know About My Invisible Illness” meme or joining the invisible illness week Facebook group.
In addition to awareness-raising activities, there will be online chats with special guests throughout the week, blog posts focused on helping people cope with invisible illnesses, lots of social media activity and a free e-book with 263 tips for living with an invisible illness. On Twitter, look for the #iiwk14 and #invisibleillness hashtags to find helpful information.
