Expert Answer: TMS device for migraine

Question: Is the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation device available for use yet?

The transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device for aborting a Migraine in progress is now called Spring TMS and was developed by Neuralieve / eNeuras Therapeutics.

It has gone through clinical trials and been submitted to the FDA for approval for the treatment of Migraine with aura, but the FDA has not yet acted upon the application for approval.

The device was recently approved in Europe and will be available there this summer. There is no word on when the FDA will act upon the application for approval in the United States, and the device cannot be prescribed or sold in the U.S. until it’s approved by the FDA.

Deborah, if the FDA doesn’t act on this soon, I’m going to start writing letters!

This would be a wonderful treatment for us. I would give anything to have something to relieve my pain. I have come to the point that nothing is going to give me relief. Five or more years of living with daily pain has beaten me down, and I am exhausted from it all. This gives me a little hope for the horizon, but yet being in the US, it may take longer. Teri, get on there tails and make them hurry. You do a great job for us!

Do you know why it will only be available for migraine WITH aura? What about withOUT?

  • Teri Robert

Elaine, I think it’s any type of aura.

  • Teri Robert

Laura, the trials were done on Migraine with aura and showed the device to be effective. I think they’re now considering doing trials on Migraine without aura.

When they say aura, do they mean only visual aura?

I found some info. It seems this is a portable devise, you can purchase yourself, once it is approved by the FDA.

  • Teri Robert

It is a portable device, and it will be available by prescription from your doctor.

Is this the same treatment they use for treating certain types of depression? It’s performed in a Dr.’s office.

I’m sharing this on facebook because I have friends who suffer from migraines. Friends whom (after suffering from them myself many years ago) I desperately hope will find relief for their excruciating pain.

Are the clinical trials in the public domaine. The location of placement for the device would be of interest to me as an acupuncturist.

Hi Charles, as a follow-up to Teri’s post, you will find one of the articles she mentioned on this page: http://neuralieve.com/clinical_trials.html

  • Teri Robert

Charles, no, clinical trial data is not in the public domain. That said, there have been journal articles published about the results of some of them, and that information should be in those articles. You could do a PubMed search for those journal articles.

Will the device be available in Canada this summer along with the European release?

  • Teri Robert

Dave, as far as I know, it will not be available in Canada concurrently with the European release. I’ll be posting updates on the availability of the device as they’re available.
