Expert Answer: Triptans for migraines

Question: If a patient takes imitrex and also has maxalt available, how long should they wait for the imitrex to work before taking the maxalt?

You might retreat with either the Imitrex or the Maxalt in 2 hours if the first dose is not fully effective. You should never mix these 2 within the same 24 hour period, however. These agents need to be taken early in an attack to be fully effective, so pay attention to te earliest symptoms that you get with your migraines.

Never mix meds like these triptans… it could be life threatening. These are powerful drugs.

Does anyone know why imitrex and maxalt should not be taken in the same 24 hour period?

These drugs are really powerful. You should never mix meds unless your doctor advises.

I’ve been having ALOT of good results with relpax. Had to stop the Maxalt due to severe palpitations and arrhythmias. Side effects from the relpax aren’t as bad for me, no chest tightness at all, no creepy crawly skin, no palpitations, and so far has aborted my migraine both times I’ve used it.

Thanks for the link & the info – I used to take Midrin as well and have yet to find anything that has worked as effectively as it. I was prescribed Firocet when I had a migraine all it did was make me feel icky up and a few hours later my migraine was still there and worse then it was before. I have almost given completely up because I can not find a Dr. that will work with me to find anything to help (I don’t have medical insurance). I have 3 kids and am a full time college student who has a husband who works full time and is also a full time college student. I don’t have time to stop my life for a 3-7 days (which is how long my migaines last) and my stomach is ruined from taking so much tylenol and excedrin to try to at least take the edge off the pain. This site is a great help by offering tips and suggestions on how to recognize potential triggers and keep track of migrianes and help find the root cause. Thanks for the support =)

Laurel Palmer: I have the same reaction to the triptans. As well as the pain/side effect from the triptans will last for 6 hours after taking them. I have suffered with migraines for 23 years now considered intractable chronic migraines. I have not found anything that works to abort them or even lessen them 🙁 I have had a headache/migraine of some everyday for the last 8 years. Even spending a month at MHNI did nothing to help me. I am very interested to hear what Dr. Green recommends.
