"I too struggled with only having access to 6 Riza-Triptan tablets to get me through a month of migraines. Since none of the preventatives worked for me, these meds were all I had. When I ran out I had no choice but to go the the ER and wait hours for treatment. Anyone who has been that route knows how stressful it can be to convince both nurses and doctors that your pain is serious and warrants effective pain meds to stop the pain. When I would tell the ER doctors that the only reason I was there was because I didn't have enough Riza-Triptan to get me through the month they would shake their heads and say, "Why not?" Finally I found an article, written by a New York neurologist that said that he would prescribe a 30 day supply of Triptan meds to patients who had not responded to any preventatives and taking this was the only way to give them some control over their pain so they could function day to day. He also said in his opinion, he did not believe that taking it as needed would cause rebound migraines. I will admit that sometimes the side effects are not pleasant but they are by far better than the pain of a migraine. Because I had been taking the Riza-Triptan for two years my insurance company agreed to list it as a maintenance drug and agreed to cover the cost of a 30 day supply. While I continue to be careful with me diet, get the sleep I need and exercise regularly, I still hope that one day I will not need to rely on medication daily and will again have days where I feel a little more 'normal'."
