Amerge Side Effects

Amerge Side Effects introduction

As with any medicine, Amerge can cause side effects. Generally, Amerge is well tolerated by most people. Even when taking different doses, most of the adverse effects are mild, don’t last long, and cause no lasting problems. However, medicines like Amerge can cause extremely rare but serious side effects involving your heart, including heart attack, stroke, or death. These types of problems have generally occurred in people who already had coronary artery disease when they took the drug. Before you use Amerge, tell your doctor if you have:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Blood vessel problems such as peripheral vascular disease (diseases related to the blood vessels outside the heart and brain) or ischemic bowel disease (in which there is a problem with blood flow to the intestines)
  • A history of hemiplegic or basilar migraines
  • An allergy to naratriptan or any of the components in Amerge

Also, be sure to tell your doctor if you have other side effect risk factors including:

  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • High cholesterol
  • A family history of heart disease
  • A personal history of angina (chest pain), stroke, or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs or mini-strokes)
  • Being a man who is over 40
  • Being a woman who has had a hysterectomy

If you have any of these risk factors, you may need to have special tests before your doctor will prescribe Amerge for you.

Amerge Side Effects

Side effects of Amerge may change depending on the dose you take. The side effects listed in the three tables below were experienced by 2% or more patients in Amerge clinical trials for migraine.

Amerge tablets are generally well tolerated. Across all doses, most Amerge side effects were mild and didn’t last long. The number of these types of side effects was not affected by the gender or age of the patients. It appears that most side effects are related to the dose of Amerge that was taken.
