Depakote (ER) Efficacy

Introduction to Depakote ER Efficacy

Depakote ER has been extensively studied to receive approval by the Food and Drug Administration for its use in the United States.

Like all prescription medications, Depakote ER had to be evaluated for how well it works for its intended use in relation to the number and types of side effects. Only you and your doctor can determine together if taking the medication provides enough benefit to outweigh any potential risks.

Studies Show that Depakote ER Works to:

  • Treat bipolar mania in adults
  • Treat epileptic seizures in adults and children 10 years of age and older
  • Complex partial seizures in adults and children 10 years of age and older
  • Simple and complex absence seizures in adults and children 10 years of age and older
  • Prevent migraine in adults

Depakote ER has been shown to work in clinical studies prior to getting approved for use in the United States. These studies looked at the effect the drug had on bipolar mania, epilepsy, and migraine.

Depakote ER Works to Prevent Migraine Headache

The effectiveness of Depakote ER in people with migraine headache was established in 1 small study. People with a history of migraine headaches with or without aura (a symptom that causes a person to see flashing lights or have blurred vision) occurring 2 or more times per month in the past 3 months were given Depakote ER or placebo for 3 months. Depakote ER was more effective at preventing migraines than placebo. (a sugar pill containing no medicine)

Depakote ER Efficacy for Bipolar Mania

The effectiveness of Depakote ER for bipolar mania was determined in part because of studies that were conducted on Depakote in patients with bipolar mania.

Depakote ER’s effectiveness was established in a medium-sized trial of male and female patients with bipolar disorder (manic or mixed type) who were hospitalized for acute mania. Patients were given 25 mg/kg/day of Depakote ER or a placebo (a sugar pill that does not contain any medicine) for 3 weeks. People who took Depakote ER had less severe manic episodes than those who took the placebo.

Depakote ER Efficacy for Epilepsy (Adults and children ≥10 years of age)

2 clinical trials that showed that valproate (the active ingredient in Depakote ER) worked to help control complex partial seizures. In the first small study, valproate was added on to their existing seizure medication (carbamazepine or phenytoin) and seizure rates were reduced. In the second study, people who had seizures while taking other seizure medications were switched to valproate and were controlled at the higher end of the study dosage range.
