Depakote ER Side Effects

Depakote ER Side Effects Overview

As with any medicine, Depakote ER can cause side effects. Generally, Depakote ER is tolerated well by most people; however certain people may not be able to safely use Depakote ER because they have certain medical conditions, such as a history of liver disease. Side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Somnolence (feeling drowsy)
  • Increased ammonia in the body
  • Gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach)
  • Rash

Depakote ER is not recommended for:

  • People with liver disease or liver damage
  • People with an allergy to the drug
  • People with urea cycle disorders (disorders where a missing protein in the liver causes ammonia to build up possibly causing coma, brain damage, or death)
  • People with pancreatitis (a disorder that causes inflammation of the pancreas; it can be sudden or happen over time)

If you have any of these conditions, you may need to have your dose adjusted or have special tests to safely use Depakote ER.
