Imitrex and Pregnancy and Nursing

Taking Imitrex During Pregnancy — Pregnancy Category C

There are no adequate studies on the effects of using Imitrex during pregnancy. In animals, pregnant animals treated with Imitrex had some babies with problems. That’s why you should only use Imitrex during pregnancy if the potential benefit is greater than the potential risk to your unborn child. If you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, talk to your doctor about using Imitrex during your pregnancy. You can also check to see if there is an Imitrex pregnancy exposure registry for that medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has a list of pregnancy exposure registries (http://www.fda.gov/womens/registries/default.htm) where pregnant women can find information.

Pregnancy Registry: To monitor fetal outcomes of pregnant women exposed to Imitrex, GlaxoSmithKline maintains an Imitrex Pregnancy Registry. If you are pregnant and taking Imitrex you may want to talk to your doctor about becoming part of the registry. Your doctor can register you by calling (800) 336-2176.
