Inderal LA (propranolol) efficacy

Introduction to Inderal LA Efficacy

Inderal LA has been extensively studied to receive approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its use in the United States. Like all prescription medicines, Inderal LA had to be evaluated for how well it works on lowering high blood pressure or preventing migraine attacks and chest pain (angina) in relation to the number and types of side effects. Only you and your doctor can decide together if taking Inderal LA provides enough benefit to outweigh any potential risks.

Studies Show that Inderal LA Works to Treat High Blood Pressure, Chest Pain (Angina), and Migraine Attacks

In adults, several studies have proven the effectiveness of Inderal LA extended-release capsules for controlling high blood pressure and preventing chest pain (angina) and migraines. Most of the studies involving Inderal LA have been small in size; however, larger studies on people with high blood pressure, migraines, and chest pain have been done on the effectiveness of the fast-acting version of this medicine, which contains the same active ingredient: propranolol.

Efficacy of Inderal LA for preventing a migraine attack

In a small 34-week study, people who took Inderal in doses of 20 to 80 mg 3 or 4 times a day experienced fewer migraine headaches and less severe migraines than did those taking a placebo (a sugar pill containing no medicine). Note: Inderal LA has not been proven to treat a migraine headache once it has started.

Efficacy of Inderal LA for treating high blood pressure

Four small studies looked at people with mild or moderately severe high blood pressure who took 160 mg of Inderal LA each day. The studies found that this dose of Inderal LA extended-release capsules was as effective at controlling high blood pressure and heart rate as the fast-acting version of propranolol (found in Inderal tablets).

Efficacy of Inderal LA for preventing chest pain

In two small studies of people with moderate or severe chest pain (angina), 160 mg of Inderal LA extended-release capsules was as effective as the fast-acting propranolol (found in Inderal tablets). Compared with a placebo (a sugar pill containing no medicine), both types of propranolol helped patients in the study prevent chest pain and enabled them to exercise for a longer period of time with fewer attacks of angina.

Efficacy of Inderal LA for treating hypertrophic subaortic stenosis

(a group of diseases affecting the heart muscle) In a small study, people who took Inderal in doses of 40 to 80 mg three times a day showed an improvement in their heart condition.

Deciding if Inderal LA is Right for You

Inderal LA has been used effectively by millions of consumers in the United States to treat conditions including high blood pressure and to prevent migraine attacks and chest pain (angina). Only a doctor can decide if Inderal LA is right for you, but you should understand the potential benefits and risks of taking propanolol. If you are taking Inderal LA and have any concerns, be sure to speak with your doctor. Never stop taking any medicine without your doctor’s advice, and never stop taking Inderal LA suddenly. This can cause a worsening of chest pain or possibly a heart attack. If you are planning to stop taking Inderal LA, ask your doctor how to safely lower your dose over the course of a few weeks so you can avoid any unpleasant adverse reactions or dangerous side effects. Also — it’s important to ask your physician about taking Inderal LA during times when you may be experiencing a worsening of congestive heart failure (CHF) or some other acute heart conditions.
