Inderal LA (propranolol) and Pregnancy and Nursing

Taking Inderal LA During Pregnancy— Pregnancy Category C

There are no adequate studies on the effects of Inderal LA in pregnant women. In animals, pregnant animals treated with Inderal LA had some babies with problems. That’s why you should only use Inderal LA during pregnancy if the potential benefit is greater than the potential risk to your unborn child. If you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, talk to your doctor about using Inderal LA. You can also check to see if there is a pregnancy exposure registry for that medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration has a list of pregnancy exposure registries (http://www.fda.gov/womens/registries/default.htm) that pregnant women can join.

Inderal LA While Breast Feeding

Inderal LA should be used with caution in women who are breast feeding. Propranolol (the active ingredient in Inderal LA) crosses over from the mother’s body into her breast milk, so your baby may be taking in some propranolol during breast feeding. If you are nursing or planning on breast feeding your baby, tell your doctor before beginning or continuing to take Inderal LA or another medicine containing propranolol.
