Topiramate: an introduction

Topiramate is the generic name for Topamax. That means that the brand name from the first manufacturer of Topiramate was Topamax and it was made and marketed by Ortho-McNeil in 1996. The branded version of Topamax became available as a generic in 2009. Each branded prescription drug also has a generic name, which you will often see in parentheses following the brand name.

When the patent exclusivity for a brand name product expires, often times multiple generic manufacturers seek approval from the FDA to manufacture and sell generic versions of the branded drug. When a drug like Topamax becomes generic, it is typical for the generic products to be priced much lower than the branded product. As such, most insurance plans offer lower patient co-pays for generic drugs, like generic Topamax than they do for branded drugs.

There are many manufacturers of generic Topamax. They include Teva, Mylan, Sandoz, and Ranbaxy. Generic Topamax is widely available and is included in the discounted generic programs of many pharmacies.

Even though a prescription drug has a generic name, this does not always mean it is available in a generic form at the pharmacy. Often prescription medicines are referred to either by their brand name (only one manufacturer holds the exclusive right to make and market the product using the brand name) like Topamax or by the generic name in this case, topiramate.

Is Generic Topamax the same as the Brand?

Generic drugs, including generic Topamax are not exactly the same as the original branded drug, although they are very similar and are widely viewed to be as effective as their branded counterparts. How Widely Used is Topamax?

Topamax is a widely prescribed seizure and migraine medicine. When used for seizures, the dose should be individualized and people should be carefully monitored for adequate effect as well as the type and frequency of side effects. Topamax is only used to prevent a migraine headache and not for active treatment of a migraine in progress. Each year, millions of prescriptions are written for Topamax in the US. Topamax has been on the market in the US since 1996.
