2 Medicines, Which to Use?

I have been prescribed Fioricet and Rizotriptin. I will talk to my doctor, but real quick, how do you choose which one to take? I tend to take the triptan if I have had a little break and maybe feel a new one coming on, and I take the other one if the pain gets to be over an 8. I haven't had much success with either, but sleep.

  1. Hi elemenope,

Thank you for reaching out to us. As much as I wish I could tell you what and when to take, only your doctor can do that.

I can tell you Rizatriptan, like all triptans, was designed to be taken at the first sign of a migraine attack, when you first know an attack is on the way, no more than two to three days a week. This medication stops (hopefully) the migraine process.

Fioricet is a pain reliever, that does not stop the migraine process, simply masks the pain. This is not the best medication for migraine attack because of this reason and it can increase our risk of rebound headache. How many migraine attacks do you get a month? If we have three or four severe attacks a month, it's time to discuss migraine prevention with the doctor!

Let me know what you think,
    Nancy
