Teenage Migraines

Hey everyone! My name is Sarah, and I’ve had migraines ever since 6th grade, headaches ever since kindergarten. My worst migraines started just last year. I have auras, flashing lights, popping in the top of my head. I’ve missed 9 days of school this SEMESTER already! It sucks! I’ve taken amitriptyline, Topamax, and Celexa. None of which worked.

My doctors have almost given up on me. MRIs don’t show anything either. Migraines have taken away my life and I’m sick of it. I’ve almost missed finals and it has effected my grades tremendously! Sometimes I can’t even talk, and I feel like my life is worthless. I found this website about 10 minutes ago and it’s already made me feel better about myself! I like meeting new people that know what I’m going through!

    Sarah,
If your doctor has given up on you, get a new one! I know it’s not as easy as that, but seriously you’ve been put on a few medications but there are so many more that can be tried. You should be seeing a neurologist that is designated as a Headache Specialist. These doctors are specifically trained in the over 300 headache disorders. They know the cutting edge medication and treatments and can guide you through trying new things. Here’s some info about Headache Specialists: http://migraine.com/blog/how-are-migraine-specialists-different/

If you’re interested in trying some other options, you may want to read these 2 articles:

Lastly if you are worried about your school work and not being able to keep up, you can formally request help. Tammy Rome, one of our writers, has a great article about this.

I hope some of this helps! Feel free to ask questions and we’ll try to help!
