Alka-Seltzer: "Headaches Due to Over Consumption"

Hello, this is probably my first and only post here, but posting my experience is something I've wanted to do for many years - on the off-chance that someone will find the same relief I did all those years ago.

In short, I suffered from severe and disabling migraines as a child. My parents put ice-packs on my head, I took aspirin (this was long before the "for migraines" aspirins we see today). Every bit of light or sound would cause me great pain, and as a child all I could do was to lay down (in tears) and endure it.

One day, our of desperation, my mother suggested I take Alka-Seltzer. I said "that's only for upset stomachs" - but she replied "what could it hurt?" - a fair response, and I was desperate for ANY relief at all.

I took two Alka-Seltzer and laid down. My headache slowly subsided and it was the first time I had experienced relief from my pain. It felt like a miracle at the time. I then read the label (this is back in the 1980's, so the label may have changed since then) - but back then, it's list on the back that said what it was good for, noted at the end... "...and headache due to over-consumption".

Over the next couple of months, I began to make a realize that my headaches started after I waited too long to eat, and due to being very hungry at that point, I ate too much (and always too quickly). This would trigger my migraine.

Over time, because my migraines would give a short period where it would "build up" until it was was at maximum intensity - I came to learn that for me, once the pain of an oncoming migraine would present itself, I would eat something, anything, but if I ate a small amount of food *slowly* and then laid down - my migraine never fully developed, and after a short time it would go away.

Since then, and I am talking DECADES, I have had less than 5 migraines (and all due to my not following my own routine because circumstances didn't allow for it, such as no food available, inability to lay down anywhere etc.)

Needless to say, this was a life-changing insight for me.

I don't know who this MIGHT help, and I imagine I may well be duplicating information that others have posted somewhere on here. But I always felt that if this helps even one person to not suffer the pain I did, it would be worth posting.

My best to all on these forums, and please share with anyone if you feel i might help them. 😀 - Chris

  1. Sorry for some of the typos, I don't see where I can edit after posting - but I think what I was trying to state is still clear enough. Thanks!
