Beta Blocker Eyedrops

Has anyone tried beta blocker eyedrops? My doc won't give me beta blockers because my blood pressure is already low, but I wonder if eyedrops wouldn't be a way to apply meds directly to the site or something. Has anyone tried beta blocker eyedrops for relief?

  1. Hi 62fuu1,

Thank you for your question. Let me see what information I can give you that may help.

My experience with beta blocker eye drops is using them for glaucoma, not migraine prevention. However I did find information using them for acute attacks; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25211851 and http://www.medhelp.org/neurology/articles/Acute-Migraines-Relieved-By-Beta-Blocker-Eye-Drops/1574.

If we have four or more severe attacks a month it's time to talk to the doctor about migraine prevention. There are over 100 medications that are available for migraine prevention, beta blockers being just one. Here is more information on migraine prevention medication; https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-management-essential-4-preventive-treatment/.

Good luck and let us know how you make out,
    Nancy

    1. A patent application was filed a few years ago claiming that Timoptic (timolol) prevents migraines. I also am aware of a case reported where another class of glaucoma drugs, prostaglandins, also might prevent migraines. I don't know how to put the links into this message but I can send you the references if you are interested.

      1. Tried it when the first news articles came out, over a year ago. Gave it plenty of migraines to try it on. Didn't work.
