Can anyone recommend a preventative for migraine aura?

Hi,

I can barely eat or breathe anything without it triggering my migraine aura, so thought it was time to try something new. Does anyone know of a preventative that is compatible with histamine intolerance (and sensitivities in general) and won't cause me to become obese, lose my eyesight or result in kidney failure? I know, I know, it's a tall order!

The only thing that's worked so far is Lorazapam but my doctor won't prescribe it any more due to its addictive nature.

  1. Hi PlaydohYeti,

Nice to hear from you again. But I am sorry to hear you are having such a difficult time. One of our contributors, Kerrie Smyres, has an issue with histamine and has written quite a few articles on it. Here is one that may be helpful; https://migraine.com/blog/the-migraine-food-trigger-youve-probably-never-heard-of/.

Let me know what you think,
    Nancy

    1. Thanks, it's good to be back. I think a while ago I struggled to log in to the old Health Central site and eventually gave up until I stumbled across this place.

Helpful article, thanks. Histamine is definitely a massive factor for me, though I can't say I feel brilliant when I get it all out of my system... I've not felt remotely healthy for several decades now. Keeping it in check though does stop me tipping over the edge, and also wanting to tear off my own skin with urticaria.

My typical diet now is virtually histamine free. I do still eat a lot of mango which is cited as being high on some lists and safe on others confusingly. It definitely doesn't make me itch though so that's a good sign.

What's tough is finding substitutes for the untouchable foods because the vast majority of anything edible brings on my aura. Even plenty of low histamine foods like milk, rice and oats are completely off the menu.

The one thing I regularly have that science says I shouldn't is coffee, but then I've given it up before and found that it was no fix-all solution. I actually discovered that I became *more* sensitive to food and airborne triggers without it. I've been told I have ME so I need all the help I can get in the energy department.

At least for me it appears that coffee in moderation is a useful balancer, as long as I don't over do it.
