Change in headache pattern or something else?

Hi all,

I’m new here, but glad I’ve found you! I am 28, and was first diagnosed with migraine when I was three years old. My migraines usually centre on the right side of my head, and last anything from 3 days to 3 weeks. I’ve tried pretty much every prescription medication under the sun but to no avail. I usually have 3-4 bad attacks a year but frequently have to take my medication to prevent other attacks and have frequent lesser attacks. (rizatriptan for the last 8 or so years). Having had migraines my whole life I’m quite used to dealing with them, however over the last 8 weeks or so I have had an intermittent stabbing pain on the left side of my head, slightly up from the temple. It isn’t enough to interfere with my day-to-day like my migraines, but enough to bother me. It seems to come on throughout the day and get worse in the evening - and some days are worse than others. I also had a week where it didn’t hurt at all. I visited my doctor but frankly, she looked at me as though I were nuts. She checked my eyes, had me move my head side to side and said she didn’t see any alarming sign but had asked for blood work (earliest appointment dec 14th). She also said she would put in for a CT scan but that it would be unlikely I would get one as there weren’t any worrying indicators.

I work from home as a journalist and am often looking at the screen, so I bought blue light blocking glasses thinking this may be the issue, but it hasn’t helped. I’m basically just concerned that this may be something more serious and wondered if anyone had any ideas. Could it just be althe pattern of my headaches is changing?

I should also mention that I take Feverfew, magnesium, cq10 and evening primrose daily, as well as some homeopathic remedies occasionally - lycopodium (anxiety) sanguinaria (when right-side migraines occur) and sepia (for menstrual headaches).

Any help/thought appreciated so I don’t sit here worrying myself to distraction!

  1. Hi kpeax,

Welcome - we're glad you found us too! Thank you for sharing your story with us. As you get acquainted with the site, I think you'll find you're not alone!!

It's possible for our migraine patterns and symptoms to change. When they do, it's always a good idea to discuss them with the doctor which you've done. I wonder if keeping a detailed migraine diary for a few months would be helpful in narrowing down patterns and symptoms your migraine attacks have.

There's no harm in seeking out a second opinion as well, any good doctor will open to that. Who knows what a neurologist and/or true migraine and headache disease doctor will say!!

    Keep me posted,
    Nancy
