cycling back to previous meds

I don't know if anyone here knows the answer to this or has tried it. But I started getting migraine attacks last year. I have tried several meds, and what happens is they work for about a month or a month and half at best then stop working. Wondering if it would work to go back to a med that worked before but stopped working. Has anyone had success with this? Maybe I can just cycle through drugs for the rest of my life?

Thanks!

  1. Hi thisisendless,

This is one of the biggest frustrations many of us have; trying medication after medication without progress. Let me see what I can do to help with this.

In my opinion, doctors don't spend enough time with us explaining how long medications may take to work. What I mean is they may neglect, or we may not hear, that it can take up to THREE long months before we see an improvement in our migraine attacks. As I mentioned when we start new medications it can take up to three long months before we see a reduction in migraine frequency and severity. During this time as our body adjusts to the new medications, potential side effects may lessen. Dosage also needs to be taken into consideration, starting medication at an incorrect dose may also play a role in this. Another thing to keep in mind is that migraine management success usually happens in baby steps, which alone is frustrating.

It isn't a bad idea to try a medication again - maybe the dose was incorrect or we didn't give it enough time to work. In any case, I would learn about the medication and give it another try!

I did this with Zonegran and saw moderate improvement - that was until it made me extremely depressed. Of course not all side effects happen to everyone, something else to keep in mind.

I hope this helps, let us know how you are doing OK?

    Nancy
