Medications & Prescription Treatment

Different migraines, different treatments.

  • By kristen

So, I just broke a 10-day status migrainosus with a round of magnesium, reglan, benadryl, torodol, and IV fluids, and BOOM. Next day, migraine with aura. Thankfully, my migraines with auras are easier to treat, and I just needed a couple of Fiorcet to knock it out. I find it so frustrating that one migraine type can be treated with just two pills, while the other takes endless rounds of cocktails, abortives, etc… before it’s even touched.

Does anyone else have a similar experience? I’m relatively new to all of this, and I’m finding all of it so strange.

    Hi kristen,

Welcome to our discussion forum and thank you so much for your question.

So good to hear you broke you migraine, that was a long one! Treating migraine IS very frustrating – some attacks seem to be easier to treat than others. A key component of treating migraine is to treat early – at this first sign of a migraine. As you experience, aura can serve as a warning light and treating early can help stop the attack.

If you’ve not read our Seven Essentials of Migraine Management, I would encourage you to do so, it’s a good source of information; https://migraine.com/infographic/migraine-management-seven-essentials/.

Thank you so much for the link! I did look that over.

I am definitely finding auras helpful when it comes to initiating treatment. I’m working hard to learn my auras, and start treatment ASAP.

I’m not a fan of a lot of the treatments, though. They make me feel very uncomfortable, and I’ve had issues with my heart rate dipping down into the 40’s with some of them. Others will make my blood pressure go up, then down, over and over. I also seem very sensitive to a lot of side effects, and I’m having issues with a lot of the abortives. :c

Seems like a medicine shuffle, as my doctor moves me from one pill to the next.

Hi, I’ve been diagnosed 15 years ago with Cluster Headaches by the VA, then they changed it to Migraines, and ran through all types of prescription’s they thiught would help. Now a neurologist has changed me to Cluster migraines. These insane pains I get are normally from 2-5 days, be this year, seem to last 15-20 days. This last one has lasted almost 6 weeks, a couple of breaks in between. The prescription’s are not doing the job, except, empty my check book. I’ve been on Prednesone since 9-19-15. Also taking 120mg of Verapmil, 100mg of topiramate, and if needed and doesn’t work anymore 100 mg of sumatriptan, believe it or not the only thing that seems to help is ginger root, the root you buy in the produce section. Tired of useless prescript’s, someone out there in Pain-ville must have the right answer. Help please!
