Disability for migraines

My daughter is 17, almost 18 and a senior in high school. We recently pulled her out of school. She missed five out of the first eight days of school. She is now doing online schooling, well at least trying. She is on her third migraine this week! She was finally referred to a neurologist. She goes in for an MRI next week. My question is, can I get her on disability and does anyone know how to go about doing it?

  1. Hi Deanna,

Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear about your daughter being so ill. You can read about SSDI and SSI in our Disability section here; https://migraine.com/migraine-basics/social-security-disability-insurance-benefits/.

Best of luck and let me know if I can be more helpful,
    Nancy

    1. I am currently on disability for my migraines, as well as fibromyalgia, bipolar disorder and depression. I have to admit that the process was grueling and a pain in the butt, but for me, it is the best solution since I suffer from migraines every single day of my life. You do have to go through the process of applying and filling out a TON of paperwork for the government. Don't get discouraged. A major thing that might be able to help you is to go down to the social security office. Also! Please don't get discouraged if your daughter gets turned down a time or two before finally being accepted. This is a "normal" process for the government to filter out those who really don't need disability. I may have not put that correctly, but that is how it was described to me by my lawyers. Anyways, please keep us up to date on your progress and what your outcomes have been.

      Sincerely,
      Kara

      1. A lawyer specializing in SSDI would be helpful in getting your daughter quallified faster than going it alone. I was able to get on disability the first try & I believe having a lawyer helped.

        1. I finally was approved for Disability for my Migraines and Fibromyalgia. The process is long and and a lot of paper work. Make sure you ask and keep a copy and record of EVERY doctor visits, test & results, Medications with all Changes When and Whys. Daily records of your pain. I feel that getting an attorney was the best thing for me to do. The walked me thru all the hoops and loops and told me what I needed and how to get it. Good Luck.

          1. ,
Congrats on getting disability! Sounds odd to say that, but it is really an accomplishment. All of your advice is exactly what I tell people who are starting this process.
            Best Wishes!
