Disability, is it livable?

My migraines are getting progressively worse, and my work environment is going the same way. I'm thinking more and more about pursuing disability, although here in the Bathroom State I understand that can be really tough. My concern is standard of living. I don't have a husband, or a partner, or children -- it's just me. I do have a house & house payment. Would I be able to keep my house? I have a used car and a small car payment, would I be able to keep that up? Could I even afford treatments if I wasn't earning a living and getting health insurance though my employer? Would I have to declare bankruptcy? I'm not even sure if I could afford what it costs to see an attorney to ask these questions.

And yes, my head is hurting as I type. Sigh.

  1. Hi Kathleen T,

Thank you for reaching out and being part of our discussion forum - we're happy you're here!

I'm sorry you are going through a rough time. Migraine can be debilitating, exhausting and frustrating. Yes, you can get SSDI for migraine, but it's difficult without your doctors support.I would first have a conversation with your doctor about SSDI and see if he/she is on the same page, then explore SSDI at your local social security office.

I'm on SSDI and have to say it's not easy for me. Your monthly payment will depend on how many years you paid into the social security system. Once on SSDI, you will receive Medicare, which is different from Medicaid. For more information, take a look at our section on disability here; https://migraine.com/migraine-basics/social-security-disability-insurance-benefits/.

Have you explored FLMA? That may be another option, which you can read about here: https://migraine.com/blog/the-family-medical-leave-act-migraine-patients/ and https://migraine.com/migraine-basics/family-medical-leave-act-migraine/.

I hope that helps, let me know if I can be of further assistance.
    Nancy
