Feverfew therapy in addition to meds

So I take 100mg of Topomax daily along with Imitrex 100mg caps when I get a migraine, and if the onset if rapid and the strength of the migraine is more out of control, I do have the SubQ injections. Under times of extreme stress, or when I wind up missing out on sleep (which happens often as I'm a nursing student) the migraine strength and count goes out of control.

I did some research on my own and found this:
http://www.migrainetrust.org/factsheet-feverfew-and-migraine-10904
http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/feverfew
http://nccam.nih.gov/health/feverfew

I have been taking a single 325mg tablet of feverfew daily for about 2-2.5 weeks now, and I have to say that my migraine count is down to almost nil... On my next follow up with my neurologist I will advise him of the addendum to the medication therapy, but I hope this is the final step in the ladder of the 'what to do' sequence.

Just a little FYI for everyone about my experience, and was wondering if anyone else had tried feverfew also?

  1. Hi lkalogridis,

Thank you for sharing this information with us. Yes, feverfew can be used for migraine prevention in addition to traditional medication and many have found it helpful. It is a good idea however, to talk to our doctor before we start a new supplement

We have information about feverfew in this link; https://migraine.com/blog/feverfew-and-ginger-for-migraines/ and https://migraine.com/blog/natural-migraine-remedies/.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

    1. I have heard alot of things about feverfew and scullcap, I tried scullcap and it did absolutely nothing for me! apparently it was a miracle for 2 people in my office that swore they suffered with the worst migraines in the world!!! zilch for me!! the only thing that gets rid of my migraines right now, is Axert. unfortunatley if I get more than 2 a week I run the risk of rebound headaches, so I thought I'll try the scullcap, nothing. I could try the feverfew but I'm doubtful there too. I've tried so many things and although I still have hope I feel like I'm flushing my $$ down the toilet!! currently I take topamax 100mgs a day, magnesium and B2. I also go for weekly acupuncture treatments which have helped with frequency and intensity but when I get a bad spell, like now, it feels like it will never end! as you all know!

      1. I used Feverfew many years ago with good results. Then I had to stop as I was pregnant. When I tried to resume it after baby was born, it no longer worked. When I asked my doctor about it, he told me that was a very common result with Feverfew. I was really disappointed it didn't work as I would have liked to use only natural substances to treat migraine. As it stands now, Verapamil and Vitamin D are working to keep attacks down to an average of once a week.
