Gabapentin Prophylactic Therapy

Hello! I began taking gabapentin about 10 days ago as about the 5th daily preventative I have tried in the past 5 years. Anyway, I have not had to take a Triptan since I started which is AMAZING, but I have had some days, including today, that I feel like my body is going through a migraine but my head pain is only at about a 2 and I have taken one Percocet on these days and have seemed to make it over the "hump". So, I am certainly not complaining, but just wondering if anyone else on gabapentin has experienced this? I don't want to get overly excited about this possibly being my wonder drug, but I will say after 22 headache days in July and 15 in August (up to 10 days ago when I started treatment), have been blissful!

Any comments are truly appreciated!

  1. Glad to hear that Gabapentin is helping you! Most headache doctors will tell you that it can take up to 90 days to determine a treatment's full effectiveness. Obviously, some people get results faster. I have noticed that I usually get a 2-week placebo effect from nearly every treatment I have tried. So my doctor and I have agreed that we will slowly titrate up or down any treatment for at least 2 weeks before changing anything. It just takes that long for my body to accept or reject a treatment.

I did try Gabapentin for about a year back in 2011-2012. It made a slight difference but not enough to justify the side effects (excessive fatigue). I had a job that required daily travel and I couldn't take the risk of falling asleep at the wheel. I've since used it for fibromyalgia the past 6 months at a lower dose. I still get sleepy, but don't drive much so it's safer.

I wish you lots of luck with it. May your relief continue!
