Have now joined the prescription med category for migraine treatment

Hi everyone,
I've had migraines since I was in college but only in my early 40's did they change to menstrual migraines (which, as luck would have it, I've read are the worst of the migraines and the hardest to treat...) Up until now I've been trying to control them with OTC Advil and natural supplements it's been hit or miss in terms of how it's worked. The last few menstrual cycles have yielded some really severe migraine attacks at the end of my period and I decided I couldn't take it anymore.

So while I was at the doctor today for sinus infection issues, I also talked to him about this and he prescribed Naproxen 500 mg. I haven't had a chance to try it yet (having headaches from sinus infection but Advil seems to be working for them) but I will when my cycle hits late this month. We'll see if it helps.

I confess I hate taking prescription drugs of any kind and I resisted doing this for many years. But if it offers me the relief I need, it will be worth it.

Tam

  1. Hi Tam,

Thank you for the update. I did want to mention if we have four or more severe migraine attacks a month, it's time to discuss migraine prevention, not just pain relief, with the doctor.

Most of us are not fond of taking medications, however, in order to live with reduced migraine attacks its a necessity. This doesn't mean we'll have to stay on medication forever!

I look forward to hearing more from you,
    Nancy

    1. Hi Tam,

I used prescription naproxen for several years with sumatriptan when my menstrual migraines ramped up in my 40s. It was pretty effective, but I found that the prescription naproxen caused stomach issues for me so I just use aleve now. Here's hoping it works for you!
