Hemiplegic Migraines

Two days ago I felt a normal migraine coming on but instead of the normal symptoms I get, my vision went blurry, I couldn’t feel the side of my body and that feeling traveled up to my face. A few minutes later, I couldn’t make out words or articulate.
I went to the ER and they said it was a rare type of migraine called a Hemiplegic migraine.
Has any one else had these? It was terrifying.

  1. Hi m.claire323,

That does sound scary, I'm sorry you went through that.

Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a rare form of migraine disease. The hallmark symptom is true motor weakness, which is different than numbness and tingling. Here is information on HM; https://migraine.com/?s=hemiplegic+migraine&submit=Go.

Migraine with aura includes visual disturbances, numbness and tingling and more. Take a look at these articles for more information; https://migraine.com/?s=migraine+with+aura&submit=Go.

Let me know what you think,
    Nancy

    1. I have had something similar, but not the same. My cheek on the side of my migraine goes someone numb. I quickly do the stroke test to make sure that isn't it. I sound drunk so I don't talk too much during a migraine attack. Most of all, movement brings on more pain. This limits much of the activity I can do during the worst part. I feel for you m.claire323.

      1. I experience these type of migraines chronically. My face goes numb, I am numb all down my right side and both feet. My speech slurs, then can't talk. Lose vision in my right eye and am so weak I can't move my body. When this happened a year ago, the docs thought I had a stroke, but realized that it was this rare hemiplegic migraine. I have 4 young children, so I am thinking that there has to be more people like me to relate to. I encourage my kids that Mom's ok and my husband he doing a great job filling in. Know you are not alone in this struggle!

        1. HI sjrayman,

Thank you for sharing that with us. How's your treatment plan going? Is it time to seek out help from another doctor? Sorry for all the questions!
