Is this really living?

Hello. I am in high school and have been suffering with a migraine every single day for the past two ish years. Nobody around me really understands. My doctors are stupid and I don't know how much longer I can deal with this. One of the worst parts is going to the Emergency Room and having the triage doctor ask what is wrong because then they never believe me when I say that I have had a migraine constantly for the last 2ish years. They look at me like I am lying. In fact, so many people around me have told me that I am lying that some of the time I think I might be making it up. And then I realize that the feeling in my head is not normal it is called PAIN and it should not always be there. The one thing that I think has made it better is being around the puppies in my puppy group. (I am involved in a Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy raising group. But my migraine stops me from working with them...often). So I am finally looking at getting a service dog but I can't find a good company. I really just hate my life because I am not living I am just making it through everyday for my family. Any suggestions about the service dog?

  1. Hi Readinger,

Thank you for sharing your story with us and being part of the Migraine.com discussion forum!

Migraine is frustrating and exhausting and I'm sorry you are going through that right now. In my opinion, it sounds like it's time to see a "true" migraine expert. These expert doctors are board certified in headache medicine which is different than being certified in neurology and treat one condition all day, every day - migraine and headache. Take a look at this information about how these doctors are different and how to find one; http://migraine.com/blog/how-are-migraine-specialists-different/ and https://migraine.com/blog/really-find-headache-specialist/.

Emergency rooms are not the best place for migraine treatment, as you've found out. But getting an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan from our doctor are two things we can do for ourselves. Let me share the Seven Essentials of Migraine with you that may help: https://migraine.com/infographic/migraine-management-seven-essentials/.

As far as a service dog goes, that may be something to think about. I really don't know much about them or how to get one, but we do have information on service dogs in this article I hope will help; https://migraine.com/blog/what-can-we-learn-from-migraine-alert-dogs/.

    I hope this helps,
    Nancy

    1. Hey there,

I'm also in high school. I suffer from migraines severely everyday as well. You're not alone and I know you're not lying. Some doctors are familiar with migraines and they can honestly be the worst kind of help. I remember going to the doctors emergency care centre once and I think this doctor didn't even know what a migraine was! I recommend going to see a neurologist. They will be fully knowledgeable and familiar with migraines and all of its sister headaches.

That guide dog group sounds amazing. Could you tell me more about it please? That would definitely be something to cheer me up when I'm not rendered uselessly in bed.

      A

  2. Hi anastasiawho,

Thank you for your post. I'm sorry you are having a rough time - that's very frustrating.

The only information I currently have is in this link; https://migraine.com/blog/what-can-we-learn-from-migraine-alert-dogs/, But if you use this link (search for migraine service dog) you may come up with more things; https://migraine.com/?s=migraine+alert+dogs&submit=Go

    1. Sometimes the doctors are a little nicer if you tell them you have had some sort of pain every minute for the 2 years (I'm with you - 2 1/2 for me) ..... but TODAY (last week etc) - the pain is much worse and unbearable.

I use headache journals to record my pain levels each day and bring it anytime I need to see a doctor - family doc, ER, urgent care, specialist etc. I had over my huge stack and they can see most days are over 4/10 with certain days/ weeks higher.

      Normally that shuts them up.

Lots of hugs! Your a rock star for getting through school with them .... I can't imagine have to do that now. I'm 29 and finished university before they went chronic and even having the odd one put me behind. Just take one day at a time, some days it's one second at a time.

Mindfulness, yoga and relaxation techniques have really helped me, maybe worth a try?

Www.dawnbuse.com has a few you can listen on her site, or download the app stop, breathe, relax (I think that's the name)

      1. I hate to say it but I have lost trust in the doctors. I began looking into natural stuff that didn’t make my hair fall out and make me feel crappy from all of the side effects.I found a product that worked for me after 30 years of suffering every single day with a migraine. I consider myself at the extreme end of sufferers. Might be worth a try for some of you and the best part was its all natural (no side effects) and they offered a trail bottle. I read all of these posts on this site and it breaks my heart to know most of you are still miserable. Look them up. It might be your answer. Doctors and meds did NOTHING for me for years!!! The name is URLifeBack and I stand by it. It gave me back my life and I’m grateful. Best of luck to all of you
