Loss of Vision?

Hi,

I'm new to the forum so hopefully I'm posting in the correct section. I've had migraines for a number of years now, but recently seem to have developed a new symptom.

I'm currently sat at work suffering from it and would be lying if I said it hadn't panicked me a bit.

I can't see properly out of my right eye and have been told it could be an "aura"?

It started as a bright dot in the centre of my vision, and moved into a wavy curved line that got larger and was moving, but moved to the right side of my vision. The line changed into what I can only described as a shimmering surface, like sunlight on moving water and now covers the right 3rd of my vision, only in my right eye. It lasted about 25 minutes and faded, but as I'm writing this it has come back.

Is this normal, does anyone else have this?

Regards,

Dan

  1. Hi Dan,

Thank you for your question and being part of our discussion forum, we're glad you're here!

It's not uncommon for our migraine patterns/ symptoms to change over time. However, when this happens, its always a good idea to discuss the changes with out doctor. This way he/she can rule out anything more serious.

Having said that, the symposium you describe may indeed be visual aura. Let me share with you information on aura; https://migraine.com/migraine-types/migraine-typical-aura/.

Let me know what you think

    1. Hi, I also experience this symptom rarely, about 1 in every 10 migraines and it always happens before the more severe ones I get, I now take it as a sign that the migraine I am about to have will be a bad one and head off for a lie down. The vision loss stays throughout the migraine, it can be very worrying you should mention this to your GP, have you had your migraines looked into by a neurologist or just your GP thus far? Sam.

      1. I'm sorry that happened to you; the first time can be scary. I start with a black dot in my left eye and then become completely blind in my left eye until the migraine becomes "tolerable". The black dot is my aura, the loss of vision, I'm told is not a reason for concern. Hope things get. better.

        1. I have this happen with each and every migraine I have, hasn't skipped one yet in seven years of attacks. Mine is best described as reverse tunnel vision where I can't see a thing in front of my face but can see around the sides, but it's very fuzzy. First time it happened to me, I was at a family gathering and I was filling my plate and I couldn't see the plate at all. I had no idea what I had on my plate and I panicked, big time. It scared the h*** out of me! No one in my family had ever had Migraine issues before so no one knew what was happening to me. If my mom hadn't been there to help me that day, I legitimately don't know what I would have done. She and my then boyfriend were the ONLY ones who could calm me down. It's very scary the first time it happens and you don't know what's going on. Hope this will be an isolated event for you, but if not, once I was educated on what was happening and what I needed to do in reaction, it wasn't as scary when it happened again... Still not good, but I wasn't frozen in fear like I was the first time.
