Low Body Temperature + Migraines

Has anyone noticed a connection between low body temperature and migraines? My son has had them for 4 yrs (started when he was 5 and is now 9). We can NOT figure out what the trigger is but we have recently noticed that if he takes a warm shower they literally disappear! So...he woke up with one this morning and I took his temperature. It was 96.7 degrees! After fighting the migraine all morning (meds, sleep and throwing up), he finally took a long hot shower and now he is back to his normal self! We have also realized that they are a lot more frequent when the outside temperature is low (during winter versus summer).

I am really excited to have this "Ah-Ha" moment and wanted any feedback you might have! Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi CAMO-

There is a condition where being cold causes problems with the blood. Headaches are a symptom. Can't find it this second, but will try to find it tomorrow if I can...

I am wondering if he has had a thyroid panel run? TSH, Free T3, Free T4, TPOabs and TGabs? Here are a couple articles here about the relationship: Migraine triggers and co-morbidities: Thyroid Disease – Part 1 http://bit.ly/rUrNec and Part 2 http://bit.ly/uemrOU Thyroid dysfunction is a frequent Migraine trigger as well as the fact it often causes daily headache. You should know though, that children's thyroid levels are higher than adult's levels, so you'll want to keep that in mind when looking at his lab reports.

One more thing to consider is that the hot water may be helping him abort the attack somehow. Wow, that would be super great if its the case.

Does he have a Migraine diagnosis by a headache specialist? It also may not be Migraine, but may be Tension Type headache that is very severe, even chronic. Tension headaches frequently react well to direct heat. Does he have the same reaction to placing a heating pad on his head? or do you think it is raising his body temp that is doing the trick?

    Hope this is helpful 😀
