medication after heart surgery

Two years ago, I had to have 2 heart valves replaced and I repaired as a result of probable childhood rheumatic fever. Before this, I had taken most of the usual drugs which worked relatively well. Now, because of blood thinners, there is basically nothing but Tylenol for Migraine (Ultra) which means that I have virtually no relief, considering the severity and the near-daily occurrence. Has anyone had any experience with this situation and if so, what have you been able to use?
My headache specialist, who is wonderful, hasn't been able to suggest anything.

  1. Hi dlrf9p,

Thank you for your question and being part of the Migraine family - we're glad you're here!

I wish I had more information for you, but this is out of my area of expertise. Have you had an opportunity to discuss this with your cardiologist? If not, that may be a good place to start.

I did want to mention not all "headache specialists" are created equal. Many doctors claim to be "headache specialists" because they see a large number of patients with migraine and headache disorders, but that really may not be the case. A true migraine/headache specialist is board certified in headache medicine, which is different than being certified in neurology. Neurologists may be fine doctors, but have a hard time being experts in one area because they treat so many different conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and others. True migraine/headache experts treat one condition all day, every day - migraine and headache disorders. Let me share this information on how these doctors are different and how to find one; http://migraine.com/blog/how-are-migraine-specialists-different/
    and https://migraine.com/blog/really-find-headache-specialist/.

    I hope that helps!
    Nancy
