Migraine with lucid nightmare

Hi Everyone, Hoping to find some insight here. My daughter has been suffering for migraines for years but until now they have been mild with an aura (hand tremor) that allowed her to take ibuprofen before the headache got bad. In the last 4 weeks, her migraines have come with what I call a 'recurring lucid nightmare'. She is awake enough to talk and describe what she sees but cannot stop the terror she is experiencing. She thinks someone is watching her and she feels that she is trapped in a box which is going to be thrown into the ocean. Each time this happens (2-3 x a week) she is able to remember more of the nightmare and describe it in more detail. The whole episode lasts about 30 minutes, which is the time it takes for the ibuprofen to kick in. She is not on any medication. She takes a Vitamin D, vitamin b6 and a Magnesium supplement. The nightmare only comes during the migraine, not during her sleep. Has anyone experienced this or heard of it? Thank you.

  1. Hi Jr-migrainemom,

Thank you for your post. So sorry to hear that your daughter experiences chronic migraine and has now began to have what sounds like very scary nightmares. There are others who experience this. The following article discusses chronic migraine and dreams/nightmares - https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-dreams-and-nightmares/. The community member comments are helpful as well. Also, have you spoken with your daughter's daughter migraine specialist regarding her nightmares? We always suggest, here at Migraine.com, speaking with your doctor when new symptoms crop up. They will be able to provide the best information related to her symptoms. I hope you find this helpful. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from you.

    Warmly,

    1. Thank you. The difference is that these nightmares occur when she is awake, not sleeping. Similar to PTSD.

  2. I’ve been experiencing the same kind of thing , I went to the doctors to find a reason why but they couldn’t help I tried to explain to my doctor that it only happens when I’m asleep my migraines gets triggered somehow an I end up in a lucid type dream where I’m always trying to run away from a spirit in my house as soon as I see the spirit I can’t talk properly, I can’t feel my body I feel numb etc I always “call” out to my partner for help then I always end up waking up after calling for help. Here’s some of my dairy’s I wrote after waking up.

Intense mind grane on an off couldn’t feel my body everything felt numb , it happened for nearly 4mins the longest I’ve ever had I thought I woke up but I was still in lucid I tried to turn the light switch on but it couldn’t work so I panicked an went to go find my bf as I opened the door I heard a voice say “nooooo dont” I still opened the door an I seen a figure (in my dream) was a girl with black hair in a white dress I called out to my mum screaming I tried to run to her room but I just couldn’t. I ended up waking up then. (I just fell asleep an within 15mins I was already in a lucid dream on this night)

There’s are what happened in my dream
somthing triggers me to have a mingrane which causes me to lucid dream with a nightmare I need answers..

    1. I'm so sorry you're going through this. My daughter's official diagnosis is PTSD. The nightmares she has are actually dissociations. The nightmares/dissociations are symbolic representations of the trauma she had gone through. Sounds similar to what you are experiencing. I would recommend you find a really good trauma therapist who can help you figure out why you feel the way you do. I do not suggest medications as they do not help PTSD. My daughter has had the most success with a full spectrum CBD. I hope this helps.
