Migraines and different auras

I am 33 years old and have been having migraines since about the age of 12. These have always began with a 30 minute aura of blurryness and tunnel vision, and then nausea, headache and sometimes vomiting follow. I have gotten used to living with these roughly every month but the headaches last two days every time now.

Over the last 10 years I have had several other episodes that begin with intense and vivid dejavus which usually last a couple minutes. I am usually confused and anxious when they happen and can't remember any of the déjavus after. The rest of the day I feel drained mentally. The last time this happened was four months ago. I don't recall headaches after, so I am concerned they aren't migraine related.

Does anyone else experience both of these auras at different times and have linked both to migraines? Waiting to get in with my doc to sort it out.

Thanks

  1. HI CurtisC,

Thank you for your question and being part of the Migraine.com discussion forum. We're glad you're here. I am sorry that it's taken me so long to get back to you.

Our migraine patterns and triggers can change over time. It is important to discuss changes in patterns and/or symptoms with the doctor so he can rule out anything more serious.

It's possible these symptoms can be migraine related, but only a qualified doctor can determine that. You may be interested in reading about AIWS or Alice in Wonderland syndrome in this article; https://migraine.com/blog/alice-wonderland-syndrome/.

    1. Dejavu, feeling ‘out of sorts’ like I’m not supposed to be where I am and living someone else’s life and visual Aura followed by a sense in dread and anxiety are signs absolute signs I know I’m going to have a bad migraine. Sometimes it can last a few days and is unerving but I know it will end, so talk myself through it. That it’s temporary and will pass regardless of how powerful the feelings of displacement are. I never get physical headaches.. or nausea usually. I’m 38, suffered migraines from 8 years old and they’ve changed over the years. I’ve never worked out what my triggers are exactly but know tiredness, dehydration are key... and weirdly, going for a No.2 always helps for some reason 😂

      1. , since you know the signs of your impending migraine so well (that is great)! Are you ever able to abort a migraine before it really gets going by taking your medication? It sounds like you have really figured out their pattern. ~Melanie (team member)

    2. No, it’s sporadic. Weather changes tend to have an impact (wet, overcast). First sign is usually usually Aura for most migraines but Dejavu is the first sign of an impending long one. Usually just take ibuprofen as trying avoid daily meds.

      1. Hi @ dannywood82,

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. You're not alone in having migraine attack impacted by changes in the barometric pressure. Let me share these articles on this topic here; https://migraine.com/living-migraine/triggered-by-weather-this-medication-may-help/ and

If you find ibuprofen isn't cutting it, it may be time to have a conversation with the doctor about acute medications (triptans and/or CGRP's) to stop the attack. There are some people who find treating early, in this case during Déjà vu, in hopes it stops the attack.

Wishing you a low pain day,
