Music-Induced Migraine

For the past 18 months, I've been getting migraines when I hear music in small spaces (cars, headphones, my office). Volume doesn't seem to be a factor. I have no problem with loud concerts, music in bars, etc., and it doesn't seem to matter what type of music I listen to. I just can't handle any music in small spaces. I can't find anything on the net to explain it or help me figure out how to deal with this. Does anyone have suggestions?

  1. Hi! That’s a great question. I never had problems with migraines until I turned 30! I haven’t exactly listened to music in a small space, but I do notice certain types of music bring on the symptoms. I am very anti-pill so I did some research and found some quick, easy remedies that you could try. YouTube has some really helpful videos and I wanted to share a few that actually worked for me.

Once it opens, just click where it says “I am not a robot" and you’ll be redirected to the YouTube video.

    I hope this helps you!

    1. Thanks for the links. I'll keep you posted. I just really want to be able to listen to music again.

    2. Hi Sofia33,

Thank you for reaching out to us for some information. If there is music, anywhere, I truly dislike, it will irritate me and may provoke a migraine attack, no matter what sort of space I'm in. It may be the small space combined with volume that is a trigger.

I have a great pair of small earplugs that are helpful for noise, made by Weatherex. Maybe a general search of noise cancelling earbuds would help?

I'm sure others will be along at some point to share their experiences with you too.

Wishing you a low pain day,
      Nancy

  2. Thank you Nancy. Migraines are so horrible and it's nice to have some support. It's just so strange though. I really want to be able to listen to my music again. Music is my way of relaxing and I can't seem to listen to anything outside of these larger areas. It just doesn't make sense to me. I go to a loud concert and I'm fine. I try playing something in my car, even at low volume, and I can't make it through an entire song before I feel a migraine coming on. I'm just hopeful someone has an idea of what's going on and how to work with this.
