Can Anyone Tell Me About Occipital Neuralgia?

After being told I had migraines for the past 3 years (but knew I didn’t) I think I’ve figured it out. Pretty sure I have occipital neuralgia headaches. SEVERE and comes on strong, pain in my neck/base of skull that radiates up to my head and into my face if I don’t take Advil. Within’ last year it started waking me mid-sleep sometimes. Does anyone else have this? Can Botox help? I’m on my 2nd round and do notice a slight decrease in monthly “migraines”. Is Nerve Block better? Ty!

  1. Hi ,

Thanks for the question. I did a little digging and it does look like nerve blocks are one of the treatments used for Occipital Neuralgia although it's listed as one of the more aggressive treatments.
As far as the botox goes, if it seems to be helping and is approved through your doctor, why not? When it comes to treatment, everyone reacts so differently to everything so although botox may have no effect on some, it works wonders on others. I hope the link above helps to provide you with a bit more information, but please don't ever hesitate to ask questions. We're always here to help!

    Kindly, Crystal (migraine.com team)
