Ocular migraine? First time experiencing this...

Hello.

I am a female 21 years old and I have had problems with what I believe to be tension headache for many years.
I have mentioned this issue to several different doctors but no one takes me seriously and they tell me to take aspirins and get used to it because headaches happen to everyone.

Yesterday though I started seeing a bunch of colors and shapes to the right in my vision and it freaked me out completely as that had never happened before. The colors just got more intense and was moving around in the shape of a half circle. It made me panic as I had no idea what was going on with me. This lasted for about 15 minutes and then I started feeling a slight aching in my head that only got worse and I have it still today but it comes and goes. Right now it's pretty intense on the left side from the back of my head all the way down to my mouth.
I googled this and found the best explanation to be "ocular migraine" but I have never had this happen to me before? I also had a headache for a few days before the visual symptoms and I have been under a lot of stress lately, more than usual.

Should I be concerned?

  1. anyone...????

    1. Hi summerday,

Thank you for sharing your story with us and welcome to the Migraine.com discussion forum!!

As much as I wish I could tell you exactly what's going on, only a qualified doctor can do that. When we have new and/or different symptoms, it's always a good idea to discuss them with the doctor so she/he can rule out anything more serious. If you haven't had a chance to do this, I would encourage you to do so.

There is no official diagnosis s of "ocular migraine" according the the Internal Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, the gold standard for making an accurate diagnosis. Migraine with aura may be something your doctor could consider. Let me share our information on this type of migraine attack; https://migraine.com/migraine-types/migraine-with-aura/.

      I hope that helps!
      Nancy
