Prep for a colonoscopy

Has anyone been able to prepare for a colonoscopy? I have had to cancel twice because of sever migraine resulting from not being able to eat. My doctor said I could take my migraine medication, which I did, but the migraine was so severe it did not work. I know it's important to have colonoscopies done but I can't even get to the prep part of it. Any suggestions?

  1. Hi Karen,

Thank you for your question. Let me see if I can help.

I've had one colonoscopy, thankfully without much migraine trouble. Because triggers can be cumulative, or stackable , a few days before the prep, I made sure to avoid my strong triggers. For exapmle, I stay hydrated, didn't skip meals and kept a regular sleeping pattern. Luckily, I was able to avoid an attack during my prep. Does that make sense? Read more about that here; https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-management-essential-trigger-management/.

Good luck on the next prep!

    1. Hi Karen,

Different Dr.'s do the prep differently. I had one that wanted me to get up at 2:30 AM to continue the prep and got a migraine and couldn't keep the drink down. Instead of using Gatorade try Sprite since there isn't any preservatives in it. Eat according to their instructions. I am going through a really bad time and recently had one. Good luck.
