Propofol - anesthesia / cured 2 month migraine

I had a migraine with aura, nausea/vomiting, vertigo, etc. for all of October, most of November and December. On Dec 8th, I had orthopedic surgery and was out for 3 hours and on Propofol the entire time. I woke up with a completely clear head and NO migraine. 7 days later and NO migraine. I then did the research on Propofol. It is used occasionally in much smaller doses for emergency TX of retractable migraine. IT WORKS! Triptans and every prophylactic I have tried don't work or have positively unlivable side effects. The surgery cured my 2 month headache!!! I have had chronic migraines for 30 years. Get the word out! Ask your doctor.

  1. Hi PDPD,

I'm so happy to hear you've had a reduction in your migraine frequency and severity. I hate to say it, but currently there is no 'cure' for migraine. Thankfully there are medications that help break a nasty migraine cycles, but we have yet to find one to stop them once and for all.

Migraine is thought to be a chronic condition with sporadic attacks that needs to be managed. It's wonderful news that your attacks have been aborted with propofol.

There is some research showing propofol to be effective in treating, not preventing migraine. I found research indicating propofol has been used to abort a nasty migraine cycle rather than prevent them. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1526-4610.2000.00032.x/abstract?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false and http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/776911.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for continued pain free days!
    Nancy

    1. PD: wondering how you are doing now, seven months after your surgery. I'm asking because I recently had surgery (unrelated to migraines) and have been migraine-free since. Only six weeks so far but considering the frequency prior, I'm optimistic. Hoping (for both of us) that you've remained pain free. Would love to hear from you. Thanks.
