Rebound Headaches

Hi there

I was wondering if anyone had any specific tips for going cold turkey from triptans and other painkillers? I have continued taking my Topamax, but I haven't taken any painkillers for 16 days now and i am starting to see improvements. On top of that i have begun taking magnesium supplements and spirulina. All these have been good, but i actually can't find a single article on what to do if you are dealing with rebound headaches! Any advice?

Also, is it true that rebound headaches can block preventative treatment from working?

Thanks!

  1. Hi adamcc,

That's great news you've been able to abstain from pain medications for 16 day! Nice work 😀 I think you will continue to see improvements in the next few weeks and as hard as its been, you will be better off down the line.

There have been studies that Topamax and Botox can be used for prevention without detox from them. We do have information on moh in this link; https://migraine.com/blog/help-how-can-i-not-overuse-migraine-medications/.

Our migraines can be more difficult to treat if we have moh and worse yet is the daily cycle of pain we can end up in.

Please keep us posted on how you make out, OK?
