Sleep Paralysis a symptom of migraine?

Does anyone else have Sporadic or Intermittent Sleep paralysis with their migraines? I have had this a few times (quite a few) but because of my chronic migraines I never tied them together.

  1. Hi spriest,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. I haven't come across this too often, but have heard of it. In fact, I found this small article about it; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16643566.

Have you had a chance to mention this to your doctor? If not, I would encourage you to. It might be beneficial to keep a journal of how often this happens, any possible triggers and patterns. It would be a good source of information to share with the doctor.

Hopefully others will be along shortly to share their story with you.

Wishing you a low pain day,
    Nancy

    1. Hello spriest, thank you for reaching out! I hear how much you endure with chronic migraine symptoms along with occasional sleep paralysis. Those are both overwhelming health concerns to experience. While we do not have information about these two things specifically, in doing some research, there is some evidence that they may be connected or at least seen together enough to be statistically significant. I thought this article from the American Sleep Association about sleep paralysis might be of interest to you: https://www.sleepassociation.org/sleep-disorders/more-sleep-disorders/sleep-paralysis/ It mentions migraine as one condition that has been linked to this particular sleep disorder in the "What Causes Sleep Paralysis?" section. I would encourage you to discuss this question with your doctor (if you haven't already!) to see if s/he can shed any more light on the two conditions and if there is a treatment method that might be helpful for you. I hope if others in the community also have sleep paralysis episodes that they will share their experiences with you. Please keep us posted on how you are managing. Wishing you a gentle day. ~Allyson (Migraine.com team)

      1. Thank you for the replies.

My Doctor thinks it is anxiety/panic related rather than migraine and there really isn't anything that can be done and is not life threatening. Granted my anxiety is higher when having a migraine, so that may be the correlation.

I really wanted to see if anyone else with migraines tended to get this. Overall I think I want to have just want 1 thing to deal with than a whole bunch of other things requiring multiple different doctors.

        1. kristinls I am sorry you have dealt with this as long as you have, it is very frightening. I have been dealing with chronic migraine for 15 years now, I am 37. I am not really sure how long I may have had SP, but now that I think about it probably many years. I think I may just be more aware when I have a migraine maybe? I have always had issue sleeping- chronic insomniac but with my migraine meds I sleep a little better, but not real deep. I have noticed I get SP both upon falling asleep and waking, but I am naturally a very light sleeper so anything can wake me.

        2. Hi spriest,

Thank you for sharing that information and being part of our community!!

      2. Hi kristinls,
