Sore spot on head during and after migraine

  • By cantseestraight

    So along with brain drain post migraine, what causes the sore spot post migraine? This time it is in the back of my head at the base of my skull. Very sore and painful.

    Hi cantseestraight,

    Thank you for your question. I’ve hear many people with migraine disease mention their head feeling sore before, during and after a migraine attack. Here’s an article that has more information on this;
    https://migraine.com/blog/scalp-hair-pain/.

    There is a condition called allodynia in which normally painless sensations become painful. We have many articles on this here; https://migraine.com/blog/scalp-hair-pain/.

    Thanks Nancy! This is more like one extremely tender spot that seems to result from muscle being affected by the nerves. It takes a day two even for it to go away. Migraines are an odd beast! I read the scalp pain links you posted and that was a good start, however, this is more like a knot or specific spot. Weird, I know 🙂 You’re the best!

    Is it right at the base of your skull on the right or left? Could it be over your occipital nerves? That’s a very common trigger spot where pain likes to spawn from. I’m often sore there after an attack as the storm is winding down. I also have scalp pain (feels like my hair hurts) like Nancy is describing in various random places on my scalp. I personally found a shorter haircut helpful for the latter, but that’s just me.

    Thanks GardensatNight! This pain was at the center base of my skull. Easing up today a little. We have rain coming in tomorrow (oh joy!). Usually I agree, the pain settles on the right or left. Even on sides of my head above my ears. This time was really different. I have had the tingling scalp sensation before too but seems more rare.

    I also get a sore spot on the top of my head, slightly down the back, during a migraine and a day or so
    after one. It feels like it does when I have been wearing my hair up in a style I am not used to wearing and then take it down.

    Cantseestraight, most times, targeted pain like you’re suffering is related directly to your migraines and once you find a solution to the migraine, I feel strongly that this will cease. You would think after thousands of years of migraine pain doctors would have found an answer by now. I found urlifeback migraine support. It worked and I am pretty excited that I found my answer. I have tried so many things and took a lot of great advise from so many of you on here and I’m thankful. Don’t ever give up hope people because you will have nothing to hold onto.

    I have these sore spots in different places on my head following a migraine. I do believe they are nerve related however. Which is odd since I am currently taking Gralise & just had it bumped up to 600 mg. I use a MaxAlt generic as treatment.

    toomuchfun, Maxalt is my favorite goto for a doozie migraine too. Best triptan I have tried. It happened again now and I tried any “icy hot” gel on the spot. That felt pretty good.
