Suffering from migraine

Hi everyone, I have been suffering from migraine and the main symptoms being severe headache, nausea, feeling dizzy or faint, vomiting etc. The pain is actually only on one side of the head. I recently read a blog(http://www.physiomobility.com/blog/does-massage-therapy-help-with-migraines-2/ ) telling that massage therapy can help treating migraines. I am not sure how they work as I have never taken this treatment. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone recommend medication that has proven to be successful? Thanks in advance.

  1. Hi Lewisy,

Thank you for your question. I'm sorry you are having a rough time, migraine can be frustrating and exhausting. Let me see what information I can give you to help.

Massage therapy may be helpful in addition to traditional medicine, however, massage won't stop a migraine that has already started. For some people however, it may help reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. We have information on massage here; https://migraine.com/blog/can-massage-help-with-my-migraines/.

If we have four or more severe attacks a month, it's time to discuss migraine prevention with our doctor. When you get a chance, take a look at this information on migraine prevention; https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-preventives-start/.

        2. Hi carolinebunch21,

Let me follow up with you. It may be time to seek out the expertise of a doctor who is an expert in treating migraine and headache disease. These doctors have extra board certification in headache medicine, which is in addition to being certified in neurology. 2. Lewisly, I just wanted to add to Nancy's great response to your questions. I regularly use deep tissue massage as part of my self care regimen. For me, the massages don't take the migraine away. For me, I really thing my back and neck pain may be part of the migraine attack. Its not prodrome, it seems to be a symptom for me. These tight muscles are just as painful, if not more during an attack.

I do not believe the deep massage is a preventive treatment for me. However, when I'm already in the midst of a migraine attack, it provides some relief from loosening up some very tight muscles. If you try massage during an attack, you should definitely tell your practitioner about the symptoms you experience, including the nausea and vomiting.
