Suffering migraines daily, turning into weeks.

I suffer from migraines on a daily basis. It is getting to the point where I'm constantly sick. My migraines last weeks at a time. It's easier for me to say "I have a headache" then "I don't feel well". My migraine meds do not work any more. Even going to the hospital to get shots do not work any more. Nausea meds don't help. I have learned to function with the pain for many years but it's getting to the point I can not drive or do daily things. Being a parent and relying on 14 year old to cook and clean is something I hate having to do. I am tired of "being sick" all the time. I need help. I need pain relief. I need a life that doesn't consist of being in bed all the time. Haven't been able to work since 2014. My pcp is not helpful (perks of living in a small town. Closest headache specialist is over 2 hours away)

  1. Hi sletson, I'm so sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time. I wanted to reach out and let you know that you are not alone. We're always here to share support and information or just to listen.

Teri has put together a great crisis guide that you may find useful in finding local support.

You may also want to contact your local DHS for information on household help (cooking and cleaning) that may be available to you. Alternately, you could check with local churches to see if they have services available. I used to provide cleaning services through a church in my neighborhood when I was younger.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if we can be of any help, or even if you just need a friendly ear. -Warmly, Donna (Migraine.com team)

    1. Hi Sletson,

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I've had daily migraines at points in my life as well, and though our experiences are all different, I understand how awful that can be.

I don't know what you've tried for your migraines, and it seems you are limited by your geography, but I wanted to ask has your PCP tried any preventive medications for your migraines? They may be unwilling to help simply because most doctors are given a total of 4 hours training on migraine in medical school and so don't know what treatments to presribe. Here is some info in case it's any help to bring up to your doctor: https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/prevention-medications/

Also, if you aren't able to get to the headache specialist you could maybe even try a more local neurologist, if your PCP is still not of help. Some neurologists, or even pain doctors, are able to treat migraine, and though we normally recommend a headache specialist we realize that may not be possible for everyone.

Hope this info is of help and feel free to reach out any time.

      Be well,
      Lisa

      1. Thank you so much. I am willing to try anything that will make the pain go away. I have tried everything the dr has given me at some point in time. Even the narcotic painkillers given at the hospital-you know the ones where they say you will be asleep before leaving the parking lot- that kept me awake for 2 days. The pill (I can't think of the name) that the dr told me it has to be taken at precisely the same time every day for 5 days straight only to find out 3 days later I was being forced to overdose by taking it that way. I've had ct scans to try to find the cause of them (since they last so long) with nothing conclusive.

I have learned to function when extremely necessary (child has a school function, dr appt or whatever) but anymore I want to just skip everything. I hate taking my dogs outside, checking the mail or well quite frankly leaving the house.

I have thick hair. I have cut it, had it thinned and layered. Last time I had it cut I had my 17 yr old son cut 6 inches off of it. It's still at my shoulders. It helps for maybe a day or two. (Used to be months but not any more) .

I can not have hormones but I take Effexor. I am trying to get into a rheumatologist. Pcp is thinking lupus or fibromyalgia, I haven't heard if having either of those can cause migraines. But I am so ready for pain relief. I am thinking of trying a diagnostic clinic.
