Toothpaste

Has anyone else noticed that you can no longer buy toothpaste off the shelf that doesn't contain artificial sweeteners? I found some natural stuff on eBay that doesn't have anything nasty in it, but then it also has the drawback of being completely useless in terms of cleaning power and leaves my teeth feeling really sensitive.

I raised the subject with my dentist who told me that I really need to find something with fluoride in it or my teeth will rot away to stumps. With this in mind I set about looking for some fluoride tablets to supplement my useless new natural toothpaste. Guess what? Fluoride tablets are harder to come by than hen's teeth and the ones you can find contain, wait for it... sorbitol, a friggin' toxic artificial sweetener!

Personally I'm not a three year old who can't use toothpaste or medicine unless it tastes of sugar and spice and all things nice so I'm getting a bit sick of this nonsense.

So, my question is, has anyone managed to find any toothpaste that works and doesn't contain any of this gunk, but does contain fluoride? Alternatively has anyone found that they're generally sensitive to artificial sweeteners, yet they can tolerate certain ones? I know I had a nightmare with aspartame years ago and haven't touched it since. In fact I haven't touched any artificial sweeteners at all unless it's by accident. Now I find that if I use toothpaste containing sorbitol or even just sodium saccharine (which is supposed to be pretty harmless I've read) it really screws me up for the day.

  1. HI PlaydohYeti,

Nice to hear from you! I'm sorry you're having such a rough time with toothpaste, that must be frustrating. The only problem I have with toothpaste, is it occasionally seems to dry my mouth out and for that I use Biotene https://www.biotene.com/.
Have you looked into Tom's toothpaste?

As far as artificial sweetener goes, yes, it's a pretty strong trigger for me. Having said that, I can have a tiny bit of it every once in a while, but if I use too much of it, I'll trigger a migraine attack.

Keep us posted if you find something that works for you!

    1. If you can find it, Dr. Ken's spearmint. It has fluoride, but no artificial sweeteners. Kind of gritty. Their cinnamon is good, but no fluoride.

      1. Thanks very much to both of you for the suggestions. I've just looked at the ingredients of one of Tom's fluoride-containing variants and noticed it includes sorbitol and carrageenan, which are both a nightmare for me so that's off the menu unfortunately.

I did manage to find something to fit the bill in the end: 'Kingfisher Mint Toothpaste with Fluoride'. Mission accomplished! 😀

Holland and Barrett sell it in the UK if that helps anyone in the same situation.
