Types of Migraines

So I used to get migraines every month which I attributed to a relation with PMS. Got migraine, within hours I would start my period without fail. Since having the contraceptive implant put in my arm and my periods are irregular I no longer get monthly migraines. I don't get them the same time as my period at all now.

Now, I seem to get them as a reaction to alcohol. I could have only one or two glasses of wine and have a migraine and be violently sick the next day. Now it's got worse, I can't have one drink without being very ill. On my 30th birthday I had ONE cocktail, a small one. It was delicious but my god the headache started within an hour, I went home knowing full well what I was in for the next day. Sure enough, I woke up, migraine, sick...great way to spend your birthday!

So I'm really upset because even though I don't drink much anyway (one a month if that), I would like to be able to have that rare drink without any consequences! I don't drink excessively and haven't done since I was a teenager.

Anyone get migraines like these? Are there any alcohols they find ok to drink? Maybe a certain cider, Spirit, wine? Organic help at all? I don't like beer anyway so no point drinking alcohol free beer. I can't find an alcohol free cider that isn't fruit flavoured. And I don't know how good they are either.

I'm too scared to drink anything at the moment! One drink puts me out for the entire next day.

Thanks, guys

  1. Complex Complicated with aura ugh my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my head.

    1. For a while I had migraines that started within an hr of drinking alcohol, but those only lasted a year or two. I just stopped drinking for a while so I don't know how long they would've affected me. My migraines seem to change every so many years. I really can't help you, but thought you'd like to know that it happens to others too.

  2. Alcohol and Red wine in particular is well known to cause Migraines for some people. However, I've read in several books that drink a clear alcohol, like Vodka, tends to not have the same effect that a glass of red wine would have for people who react to alcohol.

I don't know if Vodka is your thing, but I would try staying away from whiskey, bourbon, etc.

How long after you got the implant did you notice this issue with alcohol? I don't know of any link between the two, but you may want to ask your doctor.
