Verapamil experiences

Hi im 40 years old and been diagnosed with migraine after 5 years of chronic headaches. Ive always had migraines since teenage years but it got bad in my 30's. Anyway i seen a nuero and used propranolol first for almost a year but didnt like a few side effects so second choice was verapamil. It been less than a month im on 160mg right now and am moving up to 240mg a day. How have others found this drug to work for them. Thank you.

  1. Hi sssteviep,

Thank you for reaching out to us and being part of the Migraine.com discussion forum - we're glad you're here!

Both propranolol and verapamil can be used to treat migraine. I know a number of patients who take these medications with good results.

Neither worked for me, but that doesn't mean they won't for you. Keep in mind it can take up to 90 days before we see a reduction in our migraine frequency and severity as our body adjusts to the new medication. Also during this time potential side effects may lessen.

    I hope this helps,
    Nancy

    1. Hi sssteviep,

I've been on daily migraine preventatives for a few years. I'm on a combo of Verapamil 240, Topomax, and Klonopin.
I also am on some anti depressants / anti anxiety meds since chronic headaches can lead to these conditions.
Are you on any of those meds? Have you discussed that with your doctors? Chronic pain is very debilitating and takes its toll..

      Michelle

      1. Hi Michelle,

Thank you for sharing that with us. You're right, chronic pain can be debilitating - I've been living with it for over 20 years. I did want to mention depression, anxiety and headache disorders (of which migraine is just one) can be co morbid conditions. This means they can occur at the same time but aren't cause by one another. We're just lucky!

    2. Hey thanks for the responses. Its been about 1.5 months now and so far ive noticed some improvement. First few weeks it seemed like migraines were getting worse but last couple weeks theres been a reduction in days with a headache. The pain seems less severe too so seems like verapamil is helping. Im at 240 mg now and i guess ill see how it goes next couple months.

      1. Good to hear you're seeing a reduction in migraine frequency, sssteviep! Keep us posted on how you do!
