Weirdest Symptoms

Hi everyone!
I was just diagnosed with having migraines on Friday. I’ve been having a new symptom about every two weeks since August 2017. I’ve had nerve blocks injected in my neck, a hole punched in my ear drum, put on a diuretic, and other medieval torture... I’ve been diagnosed with Menieres Disease and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Menieres has been ruled out.

Some of my symptoms that have thrown my doctors were:
Popping ears
Itchy inner ears
Smelling burning wood
Smelling natural gas
Not being able to stand for more than a minute for 5 days straight (that really sucked!!!)

Anyone else have these symptoms? Any other symptoms I should be aware of outside normal symptoms?

I really appreciate your help!

  1. Hi Startfire33sp,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story with us! YES! The symptoms you've mentioned, although frustrating, are pretty common in migraine disease. I've experienced most of the ones you've described.

I've had a bout with BPPV recently which was not fun. My physical therapist helped me reduce the symptoms with a maneuver - something you may want to consider.

Smelling things that are there is called olfactory hallucinations. Smelling smoke, cigarettes and/or burning wood , along with many other things, can all be part of a migraine attack. You can read more about that here; https://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/aura/.

    Warmly,
    Nancy
