What to Eat after a Migraine

Hi all:
I just had a killer migraine yesterday and was in bed all day. I usually push though but my body wasn't having it. I always feel so depleted after the bad migraines - like my body is lacking in every nutrient known to man. I was able to eat soup and cereal yesterday - luckily no severe nausea. I wan't to eat something substantial today, but not sure what. My stomach is still off so the idea of a salad doesn't sit well with me. I've seen a bunch of articles online that tout certain foods as being good for migraines, but they are all foods that I could never tolerate during or after an attack (I doubt the authors have ever had a migraine). What do you eat AFTER your migraine attacks?

  1. Hi Anne,

I'm sorry you had such a rough day - I've had a few bad ones too lately. You raise a good question, but one that's not easy to answer.

Eating can be a difficult subject because so many of us have numerous food triggers. To complicate matters, what may be a trigger for me, may not be for you and vice versa. I seem to want carbs after an attack (they don't want me!) but I know may people want something sweet. It really is an individual trial and error sort of thing.

I wish I could give you more specific information!
Let us know how you make out,
    Nancy

    1. Hi Anne,

I had an awful migraine weekend this weekend, we had storm after storm after storm here.

I don't know the answer to what you -should- eat after a migraine, but I know what I -want- to eat, the same as what Nancy does. Carbs. If my stomach has been suffering too I'll do some pasta with just a tad of butter on it, if it hasn't I might try for something more exciting. I notice if its a migraine I've used a triptan to medicate, the carb craving is even stronger.

I'm also usually super thirsty, whether from medication or from just not being thirsty enough while the attack was going on (I try to drink anyway, but if my tummy is unhappy it isn't always easy). Usually I do water with a splash of fruit juice in it (my fave is cranberry) because I was told that that is as decent for giving the body back electrolytes as Gatorade and similar drinks. I know some fruits are triggers for people though, they aren't for me.

      Hope you feel better!

      1. I'm the same carbs, easy to digest, and something sweet. Today I'm having a coffee with cream and sugar as added assistance to my triptans.
