Surviving the Cyclone Bomb - Migraine.com

Prof. Joanna Kempner- Everyone laughed when, on Wednesday January 3rd, newscasters warned East Coasters to prepare for a “Cyclone Bomb” – a hybrid weather formation combining a blizzard with a hurricane. I had to admit that Cyclone Bomb sounded a bit exaggerated and maybe even made-up. The marketers at the Weather Channel finally jumped the shark. But it turns out that there’s nothing funny about a Cyclone Bomb. Much like a hurricane, this meteorological phenomenon means that within 24 hours the barometric pressure on the East Coast would plummet at least 24 millibars. But the eye of this particular bomb dropped much farther…... Read more

Steven Workman- As a caregiver to a chronic migraine sufferer, I can tell you that sometimes things are challenging to say the least. There will be days when you feel like nothing helps. From time to time, you might feel unappreciated. You might feel like you are missing out because of your responsibilities. You will feel frustrated and possibly even angry. Unchecked, all of this stress can lead to feelings of resentment that will destroy your relationship. My experience with negative caregivers I have seen first-hand through support groups for caregivers, people who all but hated their significant other because of the... Read more

Elizabeth Roberts-Zibbel- Last week when I picked X up from school, she mentioned she was preparing for a presentation. “We have to talk about heroes, who our hero is.” Before I even had a chance to think she said, “I chose you.” And then, “Well, I couldn’t think of anyone else.” We’d pulled into the garage, and as she hefted her impossibly heavy middle school backpack over her shoulder I slammed my car door and laughed. You couldn’t think of anyone else?” I asked in a mock-incredulous voice. She giggled, heading into the house, but looked sorry, and I regretted what I’d... Read more

Editorial Team- Results from a new study published this month in the journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, suggest that surgical treatment for migraine may be beneficial for certain individuals with the condition. Surgical treatment for migraine has been an up-and-coming option, and its efficacy is currently being studied more and more. In this study, 90 individuals with chronic, severe migraine who did not respond to other traditional treatment options underwent the procedure and were given surveys to assess their pain and disability levels. Of the 90 individuals, 74 were included in the final study, and represent the number of individuals who took... Read more

Sarah Hackley- What would you do if you were told that one of your go-to medicines for mild to moderate days was something you shouldn’t take because of your specific genetics? None of us wants to have that happen. Living with chronic illness means constantly looking for another medicine or treatment to add to our migraine toolkit, not looking to take something out of it. Of course, we have to remove things sometimes. We get serious or intolerable side effects. The treatment or medicine doesn’t work, or it does but then it stops working. We develop interactions between it and something else... Read more

I have been getting ocular migraines for years off and on. I am having them more than ever now and with some rather frightening experiences! A short time after the ocular migraine, I have trouble speaking words, I have them in my head but either can’t speak them or can’t bring them to mind. Also, I recently discovered that I can’t write, I had tried to write a thank you note (after an ocular migraine) and made several attempts, but could not get the words to come out right. The words were either missing letters, out of order. Last year... Read more
