The Difficulty of Asking for Help - Migraine.com

The Migraine Girl- Despite chronic migraine and lots of personal ups and downs over the last year or so, I consider myself to be extremely fortunate. I’m close with my family; my sister and my parents all live in my neighborhood, which is actually really wonderful. My neighborhood is fervently supportive of my community-centric business, and I have thoughtful, funny, and kind coworkers on my team. I even have a second, very part-time gig as a health writer, and the colleagues I have at that job are conscientious and so lovely. And don’t even get me started on my friends: I have hit... Kyky Knight- It has always been a part of my culture and an especially prominent practice in my family to wear braids. I grew up wearing them, learned to do them myself as early as my pre-teen years, and have always had an affinity for certain hairstyles requiring that I braid my hair. I remember watching television as a young girl and seeing actresses who had similar hairstyles as me and it was formative and brilliant: I felt represented and loved that I shared something with characters I looked up to. As a lifelong migraine sufferer, however, I am not able to... Read more

Lisa Robin Benson- Below I share a video about my experience with migraine and pregnancy and the decisions I made:   Always discuss treatment with your doctor The article by Elizabeth I mention is My Daughter and the Triptan Pregnancy Registry. She explains how she was part of the triptan registry and also some hard choices she had to make as well. You can also read official information about the triptan registry here. Note that when I mention sumatriptan in my own migraine treatment during pregnancy that this is what worked for me; I am not saying it is the right choice for... Read more

Jennette Fulda- I recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of my headache, though “celebrate” might not be the right word for it. As a sufferer of New Daily Persistent Headache, I know the exact day my headache began, February 17, 2008. Ever since that day I’ve had a constant headache that ebbs and flows in intensity. Medications and behavioral changes have helped me manage it better than I ever have before, but it’s still there, and it’s starting to become one of the longest relationships in my life. Anniversary of a bad thing Objectively speaking, a ten-year anniversary isn’t any more special than... Read more

Elizabeth Roberts-Zibbel- The most important items in my migraine travel toolkit are my two pairs of migraine glasses. We all know that many kinds of light can either contribute to triggering an attack or make a current one much worse, which is known as photophobia; bright or filtered sun, for example, or fluorescent bulbs, including energy saving CFLs. Sunglasses with the FL-41 tint, like TheraSpecs, best block the particular rays that are worst for migraine brains and eyes. I try to never be without mine, but I am unfortunately sometimes careless as a result of brain fog, or maybe it’s just my... Read more

Kyky Knight- Living with severe depression and chronic migraine can manifest as a sort of feedback loop of darkness it seems at times. From near daily, debilitating physical pain, to feeling unable to perform tasks because of both physical and psychological limitations, these comorbidities have a way of seriously taking away my happiness some weeks. I try to fight feeling down, but it can be so exhausting just to get through each day, and some days I don’t feel as though there is much room for fighting, beyond treating the pain from migraines and trying to push through the depression and anxiety.... Chronic migraine is a complicated neurological condition. It is not comparable to allergies. I am allergic to pollen. Pollen triggers my allergic reaction. The symptoms are ordinary and predictable. I can take an antihistamine, and the symptoms will be relieved to at least some degree. Certain environmental events might aggravate my chronic migraine symptoms. Yet, there are times when those same events do not aggravate my symptoms. I do not know why and neither do the doctors. Heat might aggravate my migraine symptoms. Sometimes, unusual stress or strong emotions are followed by especially bad symptoms.. Sometimes, all is well and... Read more
